Finnish teak sauna for homes, villas and hotels in Bali

The mobile sauna needs no foundation and moves with its owner. For hotels and scenic spots we build a fixed sauna on site to a design.

Why we made the sauna mobile

In Bali a sauna used to stand on a foundation. Once built, it stayed on the plot forever. Moving it to another villa or to the mountains was impossible. So we made a sauna that comes apart and goes back together in a new place.

No foundation, no construction

A base of ulin, Indonesian ironwood, lifts the sauna above the ground. On a firm, level surface it needs no foundation, and on soil it stands on piles.

Moves to a new place

The sauna comes apart into up to 10 parts. It is moved and put back together at the new place from the same parts.

Furniture, not a building

Without a foundation the sauna counts as furniture rather than a permanent structure. It belongs to the owner, not to the plot.

Wood for the tropics

Shipbuilders use teak. It handles heat and humidity even when it gets wet and dries every day.

Three models of the mobile sauna

The walls are a single layer of teak boards joined with tongue-and-groove and tightened with metal fasteners. The models differ in capacity and size.

Who we build saunas for

Villa and guesthouse owners

Guests get a Finnish sauna next to the pool. The mobile model needs no foundation, and the villa keeps hosting guests during assembly.

Private owners and expats

A mobile sauna can stand in the yard of a rented house. When you move, it is taken apart and moved, and your money does not stay on someone else's land.

Hotels, retreats and wellness studios

We build the sauna, plunge pool, deck and shower as one project. For scenic spots we build a fixed sauna with a glass front.

Developers

We build a fixed sauna or a wellness zone as part of the house design. We get in touch once the developer has a building permit.

Agents and property managers

We pay a reward for introducing a client. Wellnessway handles the survey, estimate, assembly and warranty.

Seven ways to use a sauna in Bali

  • Guest villa

After the pool, guests go straight to the sauna.

  • Expat home

A sauna stands in the yard of a rented home.

  • After surfing

The heat warms you up after a long time in the ocean.

  • Rainy season

The sauna stays warm and dry even when the damp lasts for weeks.

  • Mountains

Mountain evenings are cool. The mobile sauna needs no foundation.

  • Hotel and retreat

Guests rest in a recovery zone with a sauna, a plunge pool and loungers.

  • Developer project

A fixed sauna or a wellness zone makes a villa for sale stand out.

How it compares with other saunas

How ordering a sauna works

We write every agreement, the warranty and the sauna use rules into the contract.

  1. We learn about your site, the number of people and whether the sauna is for you or for guests.

  2. We measure the site and choose the model, wood tone and extras together.

  3. We prepare the estimate and contract and show a visualisation of the sauna on your site.

  4. You pay the deposit in rupiah once the contract is signed.

  5. Our workshop prepares the wood and makes the sauna.

  6. We deliver the sauna taken apart anywhere in Bali and assemble it on site.

  7. We show you how to use the sauna and look after it.

  8. You pay the remaining amount after assembly.

  9. We stay in touch and advise on care.

Common questions about the sauna

Is a sauna useful in the tropics?

A sauna warms you up after surfing. It also helps on a cool mountain evening and in the damp rainy season. We chose teak for the humid climate.

Will the sauna look like a backyard shed?

The walls are teak, and the door is tempered glass. We make the mobile sauna for private homes, villas and guesthouses. For hotels and scenic spots we offer a fixed sauna with a glass front.

Why is a mobile sauna worth the price?

A built-in sauna needs a foundation, permits and weeks of construction. When you move, it stays on the plot. The owner takes a mobile sauna with them, and its price includes the sauna and the heater.

What happens to the sauna when I move?

The sauna comes apart into up to 10 parts. We move it and put it back together at your new home from the same parts. You pay for the crew's work separately.

What are the walls made of?

The walls and ceiling are a single layer of teak boards joined with tongue-and-groove and tightened with metal fasteners. Inside, the wood stays natural.

What holds the sauna together?

A timber frame runs along the corners and the bottom. Underneath is a base of ulin, Indonesian ironwood.

Will the wood warp from heat and humidity?

Teak swells slightly with humidity and shrinks in the dry season. Each board moves in its groove, so no gaps or cracks appear. After a session the ventilation removes moisture from the sauna.

Will the sauna rot in the Bali climate?

Teak handles heat and humidity even when it gets wet and dries every day. The ulin base keeps the sauna above the ground and resists moisture. The structure has a 1-year warranty.

How does the sauna stand without a foundation in the rainy season?

The ulin base lifts the sauna above the surface. On a firm, level surface it needs no foundation. On soil it stands on piles, ordered separately.

How is the sauna fixed in place?

The base is fixed to the slab or the piles with metal fasteners.

Will the sauna withstand wind?

The sauna is low and heavy. Bali lies near the equator, and tropical cyclones almost never reach the island.

What happens in an earthquake?

The tongue-and-groove joints and fasteners give slightly and absorb the shocks. The heater is fixed in place.

Is the sauna safe to use?

The heater is electric, so there is no firewood or open flame. A guard surrounds the stones, and the heater switches off by itself if it overheats. It runs on a separate line with a circuit breaker and a residual current device. The cable is heat-resistant.

Is the glass door safe?

The door is 10 mm tempered glass. If struck, it breaks into small pieces without sharp edges. It opens outwards and has no lock, so one push lets you out.

How much electricity does the sauna need?

We confirm the power requirements for your model and site during the survey.

Which heater is inside?

An electric heater with stones warms the sauna. Steam comes when you pour water from a ladle onto the hot stones, just as with a wood-burning stove. A Finnish Harvia heater can be installed on request for an extra charge.

What does the sauna price include?

The price includes the sauna and an electric heater with stones. The ladle and thermometer are not included. Delivery, assembly and extras are paid separately, and we list them in the estimate.

How do I pay for the sauna?

You pay in Indonesian rupiah, in two payments. The deposit comes after the contract is signed, and the rest after assembly. We discuss instalments individually.

Where do you deliver?

We deliver the sauna taken apart anywhere in Bali and assemble it on site. Delivery to other parts of Indonesia is available on request. If you assemble the sauna yourself, the structure warranty is 3 months.

What should I prepare on site?

You need a firm, level surface such as tiles, concrete or decking. On soft ground the sauna needs piles screwed into the soil. The heater needs its own line with a circuit breaker and a residual current device.

What does the warranty cover?

The structure has a 1-year warranty, the same for mobile and fixed saunas. If you assemble the sauna yourself, it is 3 months. The heater is covered on its manufacturer's terms. If water is poured onto the heating elements instead of the stones, the owner pays for the repair.

What happens to the sauna if I sell the villa?

If the sauna stays with the villa, the sauna and its warranty pass to the new owner. You can also take the sauna with you.

Why can you trust Wellnessway?

We have our own workshop in Bali and build the teak walls ourselves. One team runs the whole project, and the warranty is written into the contract.
